Redesigning the Healthy Mind Map Mobile App

Redesigning the Healthy Mind Map Mobile App

I was brought on to work alongside the Design Director at Cooper Carlo on a complete redesign of the Healthy Mind Map app. The project began with establishing the visual foundation before expanding into onboarding and other core areas of the experience.

The redesign remains an ongoing effort, with current work focused on introducing new features and continuing to evolve the product as development progresses.

The Starting Point

The Starting Point

The app included a broad set of features, but they had been introduced without a consistent visual direction. There was little visual feedback or motivation to encourage regular use.

Lacked a Clear Direction

Compared to newer mental wellness products, the app felt visually dated and lacked the consistency expected from a modern mobile experience.

Functional, But Not Motivating

The app made it possible to record information, but offered little feedback, progress, or encouragement to keep users engaged over time.

Color & Branding

A new color style library was created to establish a more consistent visual direction across the app. Replacing the older gradients with a simpler palette gave the interface a cleaner and more modern foundation.

Purple became the primary brand color to create a calmer, more reassuring feel while helping Healthy Mind Map stand apart from other mental wellness products.

Figma Component UI Kit

Figma Component UI Kit

With the new visual styles in place, I created a UI kit in Figma to bring consistency to the product. Core components like buttons, inputs, cards, and navigation were redesigned as reusable building blocks.

Together, these updates created a shared foundation that kept the experience consistent across designers while giving developers a clear starting point for the MVP.

The Old Onboarding Experience

Redesigning the HMM Onboarding Experience

With the new visual style in place, the next step was onboarding.

Feature-Focused Instead of User-Focused

The onboarding introduced features one by one but did little to explain how they would support users or improve their mental wellness over time.

Information Overlaod

The app made it possible to record information, but offered little feedback, progress, or encouragement to keep users engaged over time.

Too Much Before Getting Started

Creating a More Meaningful User Journey

Creating a More Meaningful User Journey

The redesign would introduce a camping-themed progression system that grows alongside the user. After choosing a camper van, each check-in would earn stickers, accessories, and other rewards, turning progress into something users can see and personalize over time.

A More Personal Onboarding

During onboarding, users would choose the color of their camper van, giving them a small sense of ownership from the very beginning.

I focused on the UX and UI details. This included interaction states, spacing, layouts, and component behavior throughout the onboarding experience, while my partner focused on the brand identity/style.

The following examples highlight the thinking behind key design decisions. Each solution was refined through multiple rounds of iteration, user feedback and design reviews.

Focus Area Selection

Focus Area Selection

The original design relied on bright accent colors, multiple icon styles, and longer descriptions that made the screen feel busier than necessary. For a mental wellness app, the interface felt more playful than calming. There was also a very limited amount of focus areas for a user to chose.

The new iteration shifts to a more restrained visual style with muted icons, shorter supporting copy, and a simpler color palette. Because users can select multiple topics, the active state relies on subtle icon and border changes rather than traditional radio buttons, creating a cleaner interaction while keeping selections easy to recognize.

Starting Activity Selection

The original screen relied on bright colors, long descriptions, and a traditional list that required more reading before making a choice. The amount of color and detail felt busy for an experience centered around mental wellness. (new feature to encourage use)

The redesigned screen uses a simpler card layout, shorter copy, and a more modern illustration style to create a calmer first impression. The larger illustrations also reinforce that this is the beginning of a new journey, while making each activity easier to scan and compare.

Designing the Sticker Collection Experience (Current Work)

I'm currently designing the sticker collection experience as part of the larger gamification system. Users would earn sticker packs after reaching specific milestones and accomplishments, giving them another reason to keep checking in and making progress.

Each sticker is designed with a subtle skeuomorphic style to feel like a real collectible rather than a flat icon. Users would browse and flip through their collection just like physical stickers before adding them to their camper van, making progress feel more personal and rewarding over time.
